White - it's luxurious, it's fresh and it's versatile. It creates the illusion of more space, and it adds a layer of serenity to hectic daily life. These are just a few reasons why I love working with a white colour palette, and this also explains why white interiors continue to be one of the most-requested asks that I get from my clients. For those who are planning to jump on this trending decorating motif, here are some tips from a pro.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to go all white to stay true to this aesthetic. The idea behind a white interior is to enhance the sense of brightness in a home, but that's not to say there isn't room for some complementary elements. A strategic pop of colour or bold, black accents can bring some much- needed punctuation points to your space.

Speaking of colour, did you know what "white" as we know it comes in a spectrum of tints? There are warmer, yellowish whites and cool, bluish or purple tones. Then there's intensity to think about. Especially against an all-white backdrop, even a subtle off-white can look dramatically different. Be subtle in your variations of off-white hues, and be sure to stay within the same temperature. If you're goal is a warm- white space, ensure all your finishes and selections are warm as well.

White has it's obvious benefits as an interior motif, but be sure to also view this trend through a practical lens. High-traffic areas can become dumping grounds, and is often the case if you share a home with pets, kids or messy housemates. This is because white tends to make oddities stand out even more than they normally would. To ensure you maintain the integrity of your white, clean and fresh space, incorporate smart storage solutions that can handle daily life. Built-in shelves or cabinetry will make the best use of your space, and when painted all white, will blend in seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.

Since you're working with a limited colour palette, bring interest to your space by incorporating a variety of textures and materials. Consider different finishes, sheens and patterns as a way of breaking up all that white. Texture adds depth and warmth, which is essential in achieving that "homey" look and feel.

TIP: Natural materials such as wood, stone and metal is a great complement to a white backdrop, but won't compromise the intended aesthetic!

White can work wonders in making a small home feel bigger, a dark home look brighter and a dated home looking fresh and clean. Whether you go all in with your all-white interior, or you choose to add this timeless hue in measured doses, appreciate the purity of white and let it speak for itself. You might be surprised at what white says about you and your space!
