RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY: Jenelle McCulloch
INGREDIENTS
GOAT CHEESE BALLS
(Makes 8 1 oz cheese balls)
8 oz goat cheese, chilled
½ cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp dried thyme
Salt and pepper, to taste
Vegetable oil, for frying
HOT HERB HONEY SAUCE
½ cup honey
1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped
1 tsp fresh rosemary leaves, chopped
DIRECTIONS
GOAT CHEESE BALLS
Divide the goat cheese into small, bite sized portions and roll into balls. Place them on a baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Set up a breading station with three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt and pepper.
Roll each goat cheese ball in flour, then dip in beaten eggs and coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat this twice to ensure they are well coated.
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep frying pan or pot.
Fry the goat cheese balls in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
HOT HERB HONEY SAUCE
In a small saucepan, combine honey, crushed red pepper flakes, thyme and rosemary.
Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the honey is warm and the herbs are fragrant, about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly before serving.
TO SERVE
Arrange the fried goat cheese balls on a serving platter. Drizzle the hot herb honey sauce over the top or serve it on the side for dipping. OH
