At Home With…Luke, Jake and Josh Burella

Luke Burella and his twin brothers Jake and Josh grew up in Wasaga Beach. They graduated from what is now Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School and set out to discover life’s path. In 2017, while studying Kinesiology at Brock university, Luke founded Primitive Patterns, a whole-health enterprise based in Collingwood that promotes the power of human health and movement. his brothers soon joined him. Josh, a TEEX Fire Training Academy graduate and certified holistic nutritionist, and Jake, with a degree in Medical Sciences, are both certified Personal trainers. the twins are also accomplished long-distance swimmers. In August, they raised more than $30,000 for youth mental health by swimming from Christian Island to the terminals in Collingwood, a truly incredible feat. OUR HOMES caught up the Burellas to find out what’s next.

OUR HOMES: Luke, tell us about Primitive Patterns and your vision.
Luke: Over the past few years Primitive Patterns (primitivepatterns.ca) has begun to evolve into a health and lifestyle brand. What started out as outdoor workouts and training has now become much more, with retreats in Nicaragua, an apparel line and pop-up events that make us a unique health and wellness brand. Our ultimate goal is to train elite-level athletes and host destination retreats around the world that allow people to reconnect with their minds, bodies, nature and the universe at large.

OH: Jake and Josh, what inspired your 32 km swim?
Jake & Josh: Our 32 km swim (GB32) was inspired by a multitude of things, but more so than anything we believe in giving back to our community and using our strengths to channel it into something positive for those around us. Youth mental health is the worst it’s ever been, and we figured as two 22-year-olds we could make a real difference and show young people in our community we are here for them.

OH: What was the most important lesson from your swim?
J&J: The mind and body are capable of pushing past any perceived limits.

OH: Tell us about your internship:
J & J: We are both interning for two months with Gary Roberts High Performance Training where we will be shadowing the head trainer and watching how some of the best players in the NHL prepare for a season. This internship will prepare us for our ultimate goal of training elite-level athletes here in Collingwood.

OH: You live together near Blue Mountain: how do you relax and spend your downtime at home?
l, J & J: We honestly live a pretty simple life. To relax and chill out we enjoy long hikes on the Bruce Trail, a round of golf or sitting by the campfire with friends and family.

OH: Who does the cooking and what’s a family favourite?
l, J & J: We all take turns cooking and a family favourite is a nice pasta dinner.

OH: What advice do you have for anyone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle?
l, J & J: Get outside, drink water, eat healthy 80 per cent of the time, find an hour a day to move your body, and take 10 minutes a day to sit down and do nothing but breathe. Health truly is so simple – nail the basics.
