Decorating With Art

Art can really make or break a space; it is so very important to the overall finish and cohesive look of a room. If you compared photos of a fully styled and decorated space with and without art, the difference would be shocking. Unfortunately, in a large scale reno or new build it seems to be the first thing to get cut. I would encourage anyone tackling a big project to work art into budget right from the beginning. It can literally change your mood in an instant. If original pieces are not in your budget, then buy a print from a local artists series.

What’s Important when selecting art?

Scale is so important when selecting the art for a room, and we can make almost any piece any size with the magic of custom framing. If I have a client fall in love with a 9”x12” original painting, but we need it to fill a huge wall behind a sofa, I can make that work with big, oversized white matting and custom framing. That way you still get the piece you want, and it fits the scale of the room. Another way to tackle a large space with smaller pieces is to incorporate them into an eclectic gallery wall.

What’s on trend

What's cool right now are oversized matts and thin frames. Natural wood framing can also work to give the piece and earthy vibe. I can also suggest items such as rugs or tapestries as art, or found objects framed in boxes. Abstract pieces and mixed media pieces are also gaining popularity. The most important part about selecting art for your home is that it needs to speak to you. You need to love it.

What to do when you don’t have conventional walls?

There are lots of new systems out there to hang walls from the ceiling. In condos there are a lot of pillars and glazing. So not a lot of flat wall space to hang art on. Why not hang it from a metal track from the ceiling strategically over one of the pillars? they have been doing it in condos for years with mirror so why not art?

Art is one of the most important finishing touches for your space. It ensures that your room feels finished, curated and beautiful. We’re begging you. Don’t forget the art!
